According to the Hindu
mythology, once upon a time Sage Naradha was travelling through the Sahyadri
mountain; he mocked the mountain god “Sahya” as unlike the Himalayas and other
mountains; Sahya do not have any temple belongs to Lord Siva. Hearing this word “Sahya” mountain eagerly
started praying for the presence of Lord Siva in this mountain area.
Lord Muruka, son of Siva and Parvathi; killed the evil spirit “Tharakasura”. Lord
Siva and Parvathi started to take care of the orphaned three sons of “Tharaka”
after his death. They were three of
them. Also called “Thripuras”. They were living in a Three Palaces. They worshipped Lord Brahma and took his
blessing as only “Lord Siva” will be
capable to kill all of them; when there - Three moving palaces will come in a
straight line. Due to Brahma’s blessing ‘Thripuras’
became very arrogant and started to kill innocent people as well as ‘Devas’.
Hence, all ‘Devas’ approached
the Lord Siva to kill these evil spirit ‘Thripuras’. To save the universe from the evil spirit
Lord Siva killed ‘Thripuras’ when their moving palaces came in a straight
line.
After the war with ‘Thripuras’
Lord Siva was very tired and decided to take rest in the valley of ‘Sahya’
Mountain. Seeing the presence of Lord
Siva in the mountain; ‘Sahya Mountain’ became very pleased. He approached the Lord Siva and pleased him;
requested for his presence in this mountain forever. Due to Sahya’s request Lord Siva became a “Jyothir
Linga” idol in this mountainous area – to bless the world.
There was another belief that
there was a demon called “Bhima’ was living in this place. He was the son of ‘Kumbhakarna’ who was the
brother of ‘Ravana’ during the ‘Ramayana’ age.
This demon ‘Bhima’ was a very disastrous evil spirit. Due to the request
from the King ‘Kamaroopeswar’ Lord Siva killed this demon and got the name as “BHIMASANKAR”.
This ghat area is very
scenic. There will be always cool wind
from the mountain area towards the temple.
These mountains are filled with various rare organic plants as well as
wild animals.
It will give us a different kind
of devotional spirit !
